How to start a clothing label in 4 easy steps
Allot of people dream of owning and running their own clothing companies have no idea where to start. Here are a few practical steps you can take to turn your dreams into reality.
1)
Most brands start with an idea or message you are passionate about. This could be a lifestyle, trend, musical culture or even a political movement. The theme you decide on will influence your designs and how your brand is perceived by the buying public. This is the hardest part of starting a clothing brand. Examples of themes are streetwear, urban, high end or alternative.
2)
Now that you have an idea of the type of clothing company you want to start you will need to create a brand identity which means you need a logo or an image that will make your brand stand out. The logo must reflect what your brand stands for and could be an abbreviation of your brand name, a mascot or even an animal/image that symbolizes the message behind your brand. Try to make you logo standout by using bold colours and or by including a slogan or tag line. Nike has ‘just do it’ and Adiddas has ‘impossible is nothing’ what will your tag line be?
3)
So you have your brand name and logo and you have idea of who your perfect customer would be. Now it’s time to decide on what products you want to design. Most brands would love to start off by having a collection which has t-shirts, jeans jackets and accessories but this usually hard to do because lack of funds, knowhow and manufacturing contacts. Hence most brands start with an item everyone on earth owns – The T-Shirt. Why you ask? T- shirts are the easiest and quickest way to get your designs to the world. They are affordable to buy in wholesale and can be printed with an assortment of finishes and colours that will ensure your designs attract attention. If you have an image or drawing that you would want on a shirt you can transfer it into photoshop or illustrator. Not to worry if you have no knowledge of these programmes simply send the image to Glfffix printing services where our in-house design team will digitise your design for printing.
4)
Most t-shirts are screen printed and this involves creating a screen (mesh and frame) which has your design etched on it. With the use of screens and special inks the shirts are printed and dried in a special machine. Viola you have your own branded t shirt.
